When your WORKBENCH isn't working

I was tired of my workbench not having any work holding options. For years I’ve been using clamps on the side which work, but are very limiting. This week I upgraded my workbench by adding two quick-release vices, t-track around the sides, and dog holes.

The cross-bracing that makes this workbench so robust

My workbench has been the foundation of my shop for years. It’s 6ft (2m) long by 3ft (1m) wide and was built out of 2x4s and plywood with a circular saw. It has a criss crossing half-lap framework that makes it extremely strong and dead flat. I love it! It’s primary purpose before starting the project was as an assembly table, but with the addition of some work holding options, It can be a whole lot more!

My concept for the upgrade is to devote a third of the workbench to traditional work holding, and leave the other two thirds as an assembly table. the assembly table side won’t be without options though! I’m adding t-track all the way around the sides, so I can build all sorts of jigs.

The vices I’ve picked are quick-release vices from Rockler. The smaller one is the Rockler Heavy Duty Quick Release Front Vise. This stout little vice will be used for smaller projects like cutting drawer dovetails, and carving. The larger vice is the Rockler 12'' Quick Release End Vise. This will be used for hand planing, and holding larger work pieces.
